How to power up without plugging in

advertisement

Imagine juicing up your laptop computer or cell phone without plugging them into an electrical socket. That's a luxury that could be provided by wireless power transmission, a concept that has been bandied about for decades but is creeping closer to becoming viable.

Who's leading the conversation?
This visualization below allows you to see the impact that each user has on the current conversation. The top row contains the group of users who have had the most impact, the 2nd row the group of users who have had the 2nd most impact (et cetera). Users with similar impact are grouped together, and the average score of the group is shown to the left of the group. The author of the article is also shown on the left, in their corresponding group. Each user's score is based on the number of comments the user has made plus the number of votes their comments have received. The scores are calculated relative one another, so while their absolute value is not particularly important, their relative difference does indicate a larger difference in impact on the conversation.

this is nothing more than what nikola tesla prove decades ago. nothing more then a theivery of technology that a great man never got credit for

The fact that Tesla figured out the possibility of energy transfer does not make a refinement "thievery". It is an interesting concept that will certainly add to the debate about the harmful effects of strong electromagnetic fields on the human body. I would not want it in my house.

Glad there are others out there who read, or atleast watch Discovery or the History channel. This article takes the effort to spell out MIT but cant give credit to Tesla. Forget about computers and cell phones, how about lights, heat, and other necessities. Sadly though we will never see this come to light - no energy company will ever produce power that anyone can have access to for free.

You want to live inside a microwave??? Twenty-five percent loss is unacceptable, just plug it in, equals zero loss. Too lazy to plug it in, then set it on a docking station.

You want free light, walk below a high voltage transmission line and you can light a 60w florescent light bulb. Do not worry about the sunburn or cancer you will get years later.

Hmmm, I wonder what the human-frying equation is? All that non-directed energy has to go somewhere. Even cell phones have their health-related problems.
Somehow, I believe they will figure out a way, and with the user in mind. This stuff is certainly in the future.. Goodby to all those messy wires, and to high copper market earnings.

I doubt we will see the fruition of Tesla's dream, where homes need no wires for their devices and appliances. Nikola Tesla believed in free energy, broadcast from great central towers for all to use freely. The power companies will never stand for that, as they will not have the iron fist of being able to cut off your power for non-payment. The best we will probably ever see is a home-mounted receiver that powers the household, along with a meter so the power company can bill you.

Tesla coils work somewhat differently from high voltage transmission lines. Most high voltage lines upwards of 380KV run at 60hz or lower while Tesla coils transmit power in the kilohertz or megahertz frequency range - the same as AM/FM radio. Low frequency energy is more damaging than high frequency, which is why high voltage lines are so dangerous to live around.

General physics shows that low frequency energy passes through objects while high frequency reflects, or in the case of a conductive medium, runs across the surface and around the object. Audio wave energy demonstrates this principle. In a club, music from a speaker stack is loud and full-range, but if you step outside and close the door (requiring the sound to pass through a solid object), all you hear is the bass and kick drum (low freq) while high-hats and other high frequencies are blocked/reflected.

So, returning to the high power lines; their low frequency magnetic waves are what permeates your body and alters cellular structure, resulting in tumors. AM/FM radio waves, on the other hand, do not affect you in that way because of their high frequency, and neither should Tesla energy, if properly applied.

AC Robertson- As stated in the article, a power loss of only 25% is less than is lost from the transfer from a battery pack. Nickola Tesla not only came up with wireless power transmission decades ago, but demonstrated it in 1981. The genius of this man is incredibly and I highly suggest reading up on him.

I am surprised it took so long for anybody to continue with Tesla's work, to be absolutely honest. As to those who worry, the Earth is absolutely saturated with energy fields now. Tesla was working in very high frequency ranges, with extremeley high voltages. The higher the voltage, (typically) the greater the efficiency. Thus if some one could really polish up the technology, theory has you could run your house off of the local radio stations broadcast power. In Tesla's model, he had devised a single power generating station that theoretically would power the world. No doubt a very scary concept, and with out question had the "Doomsday" folks totally scared out of their wits.
