Obama entrances Europe in vague tones

advertisement

Barack Obama touched on American and European ideals in his speech in Berlin on Thursday, but was vague on crucial issues of trade, defense and foreign policy that currently divide Washington from Europe.

In the Steven Erlanger, New York Times article, I was not surprised to hear griping, moaning, whining and complaining. The fact is, if Senator Obama's speech was "vague" at all, he could have done nothing more because he is not the President of the United States and he's is well aware of it. Had he been less "vague," more specific, today the New York Times would be filled with articles screaming, "Who does he think he is!" In fact, there is absolutely nothing that Senator Obama can say or do that the media doesn't complain about, after all, every media outlet in the United States is owned by multi-millionaires and has CEOs that don't want change. They like the way the Bush administration has pandered and catered to Big Business for almost 8 years and they don't want it changed. As for Senator McCain, if HE had been the one who was giving the speech in Berlin, two things would have happened: First, it would have been held in the "Bratwurst" aisle of the local grocery store; and second, five people would have shown up to listen to him ramble, mumble and stumble around until he once again made a complete jerk out of himself, . . . tell me Bush and McCain aren't twins who were separated at birth.

" They like the way the Bush administration has pandered and catered to Big Business for almost 8 years and they don't want it changed."

Ummm, duh, because if we resorted to Obama's Robin Hood economic style (which is a bringing back of policy that failed us 100% of the time in history), their costs would jack up by a huge factor, which in turn would increase everything from consumer costs to insurance rates, while decreasing job growth, which would all in turn affect the poor and middle class. Those who wouldn't receive assistance from the money taken from businesses and the wealthy would still have to pay the higher costs, which would create a HIGHER poverty rate, leading to less product and services being procured, which ALWAYS leads to costs increasing yet again, hurting the poor and middle class more, reducing sales and then hurting businesses, driving them under.
Of course they don't want to lose support for business growth, if they do they suffer. But in the process, the rest of us suffer as well. If you attack one financial class, do you honestly believe that it doesn't reflect right back around and affect every financial class? The only solution is to support expanded business growth, to NOT attack businesses. Sure, the poor won't get to cheer as the rich are stolen from, but it's the poor that get helped the most in the process. It's all about image when the rich are taken from, those who support it are those who don't understand the consequences and long term results. It's the POOR who really shouldn't want it changed to what Obama has promised. To increases taxes for only those who make in the six digits, while also increasing minimum wage at the same time? Hey, why not just reach your hand directly into the wallets of the poor and middle class, because that's exactly who Obama would hurt the most while congratulating himself for sticking it to the rich. The economy works in a circle, you can either help EVERY financial class, or you can hurt the all. There is no attacking one to help the other. Support business growth, consumer costs lower, job growth increases as research is expanded, allowing more people to purchase, which helps to further lower costs and boost business. That's the ONLY correct course of action. Take from businesses without them seeing a boost, and you're doing nothing more than taking the long route to rob everyone else. And THIS is why the vast majority of economists (from BOTH political parties) are crying so strongly against Obama's policies, practically yelling that they will only hurt all of us, and Obama just tells them they're elitists and his ideas will work, even though he's just a politician and not an expert in those areas. Big business and the poor alike should all side in the same direction, because only a support of all of them will help them all.

Yeah, you nailed it. The media does everything it can to hold him down. That's why those lousy rich CEOs at CBS, ABC, & NBC, sent Katie Couric, Charles Gibson, et al to fawn over him on his Magical Mystery Tour of Iraq.

Since you brought up the entire trip you left yourself open to Isreal where his campain distributed Obama 08 posters to the locals to be hung when he made his "surprise" visit to the West Bank earlier the other day. I find it truly hard to believe that this entire trip isn't a political stunt to show people that even with his 186 days in the US Senate it fully qualifies him to be the leader of our country. Change just for the sake of change? Be careful about the change you seek, it might bite you later.

As for the speech being compared to President Reagen's speech, HELLO REAGEN WAS OUR PREISIDENT. This is a stunt by the Obama campain to distinguish himself (although he said that he probably didn't look like the other Americans that spoke in Berlin, I wonder didn't Gen Colin Powell and Condelezza Rice speak in Europe?) as someone willing to cross the aisle on all fronts including to the EU. Last I checked his voting record shows he couldn't even stumble over to the other side let alone walk so what does he think the EU is going to do fall over there heels trying to get on his good side?

This just shows ignorance on all levels in our system of Government, usually a candidtate has some qualifications or stances that make you wonder if you will vote for them. But when they don't have any stance at all or keep changing their mind to go along with the polls shows their complete ineptitude and I will fully question their ability to lead. Leadership is the ability to infuence and direct others to accomplish a mission or goal. Obama's only goal is to breed socialism (seeing is how he votes to the left of the self declared socailist in the Senate) and malcontent towards any one that either doesn't agree with him or unfortunatly comes between him and his legacy to become the first half black/half white President of the United States.

The Devil can't say the word................ "Jesus" .........................................

Obama can't say: ...............I pledge allegiance to the flag of United States of America., and to the republic for which it stands, one nation under God indivisible with liberty and justice for all.
So, why should he be President.

Obama was politically forced to wear an American flag pin. He didn't choose to by himself, his campgane managers forced hm to wear one or the campgene was over. He doesn't deserve to be pressident.

..His wife was never proud to be an American until Obama's campgene managers forced her to say that she was proud to be an American and she was only proud to be one for the purpose of getting her husband elected. A family like that shouldn't be in the White House.

After 20 years of being induced with hate and racisim by Rev. Wrong. Obama says that he didnt pay attention to those times of disgraceful prejudice remarks from his pastor. He's lying through his teeth.
He for lying so blatenly to the American shouldn't be President.

It goes on and on whith this man. Why in the hell would anyone vote for him. He and his wife are closet racist.

Frank, your a prejudice flag wrapped id***. Barack Obama has not only said the pledge to the flag, he as even lead other Senators in the pledge. BTW the scene with Obama not with his hand on his heart was during the National Anthem. You probably don't know this, but you as a citizen of the United States do not need to put your hand over your heart during the National Anthem. What you are telling me is that you know little about the flag, the history of the flag and sadly just enough history about our country to make you think you know something.

BTW! Any Presidential candidate when speaking abroad needs to use broad and vague themes. Why, well, until they are in the Office, all facts, data etc etc are not on the table. To speak in specifics without all the facts is arrogant and foolish. However, if you want an arrogant foolish President by all means - Oh! I'm sorry, we already have that.

"Obama entrances Europe in vague tones. Leaders remain unsure where candidate stands on issues of trade, defense" So the basic theme here is, just as it is in America, that people love him, but it's only because of his ability to stir emotions in speeches, not because of what he would actually DO as President. Great, let's all vote for a person based on stirring emotions, and then he can push through his Robin Hood economic proposals and all of our costs can jack up and screw the poor and middle class. Makes a lot of sense. This is a big problem in my opinion, especially if the rest of the world sees the same thing. They love to listen to him speak, but don't know what he can actually accomplish as a President. While the article went out of its way to make him sound like he is still a decent candidate, the entire world's reaction to him everywhere he goes shows that he is not. We would have cries of happiness when he speaks at the beginning, but then the policy pushes start and we all suffer. Bush won because of the same reason people support Obama, reasons that no politician should ever be voted in for. Now that he is receiving such support everywhere he goes, but the type of support is made more and more apparent, it is obvious that after the speeches are all done we would have a serious problem maintaining any sort of favorable world view. It's like watching Bush at the beginning all over again, the same cries from all over the world, followed by the inevitable questions of, "well, what is he actually doing?" I think the type of favorable responses he's received compared with the rather negative responses shows a candidate that does not have the support from world governments needed, nor at home, to be President, nor does he have the support for the experts in the fields he's trying to change, with cries (from his own party even) against his desire to bring back certain economic styles from the past that have hurt us. The reactions everywhere he goes demonstrates exactly why this man should not be President.

Obama just asked Germany for soldiers and a strong commitment to stabilize Iraq ...

In a rather vague way of course!

LOL! So our anti-American New York Times got that right at least.

But that's GOT to be an off putting message to the Germans! And Europe in general.

Our German "allies" to this day have refused to participate in Afghanistan even!

So in a way Obama challenged them.

The irony is Obama is demanding our euro-chicken allies to have more of a BACKBONE against "terrorism" than his own political base here in America can possibly GROW. Obama is demanding more skeletal substance from Europeans than Americans!

He promises us Americans he'll run us out of Iraq. Then he turns around and asks our most spineless european ally who've refused troops to Afghanistan he wants *them* to help on both middle eastern fronts! How's that for a cohesive message!

Did the Germans even notice that? Evidently not. Did we notice that? Course not! Too funny.

But it's all in line with Obama's mish-mashed, conflicted, and ever fluid "vision".

Why do the Europeans have to throw down while we Americans throw down ... the towel? Well? The europeans can't vote against him. Americans can.

Hey. They guy's going to save our world, right? So why not? I'm all for an unconditional surrender in Iraq and having the Germans take over where we left off! LOL!

But if Obama can sway our naive Euro-Buddies to commit in a big way to Iraq, Afghanistan and ultimately Iran and Pakistan?

                      I'll vote for him!

Hey. Bush tried to reason with them. It didn't work. Maybe Obama can talk them into it! A good looking, smooth talking, well dressed, cologned black guy talking his way to laying hundreds of euro-chicks over spring break. It's been done before. Can Obama do it on a mass scale? Or is it just TALK?

                      Cheryl,

You are telling an incomplete story. I think you know that.
It's okay though. Many women are jealous of beautiful, educated, rich women with many accomplishments.

Yeah, happy, the complete story is that after Carol was hurt in a car accident, she refused to tell McCain because he was a POW, then after he came home, he had extramarital affairs, then McCain shacked up with SPED teacher Cindy(she was probably only one who could understand him), who by the way is way rich, and he divorced Carol and married Cindy. End of story. Stupid statements just keep rolling in.

                          Aha! That dirty McCain.

Once again we have to talk about his divorce THIRTY YEARS AGO!

How dare he divorce his wife THIRTY YEARS AGO!

I mean, come on, it just doesn't matter that divorce is not illegal and that millions of Americans have divorced their spouses! How DARE John McCain divorce his wife THIRTY YEARS AGO.

How dare he stay happily married to his second wife for THIRTY YEARS?

And how dare they be so happy for THIRTY YEARS?

And, yes, it doesn't matter that John McCain was a prisoner of war for 5 1/2 years, during which time he and his first wife were apart and that they barely knew each other any more when he returned! They should be forced to stay married like the rest of us because misery loves company!

I know what you're thinking -- you can't stand YOUR spouse, but by God you had to stay married to him/her so why should John McCain get to get a divorce and marry somebody he loves?

So John McCain, we shouldn't vote for you because you divorced your wife --- THIRTY YEARS AGO!

A couple of personal observations about his speech. He got rabid applause when he alluded to the bad things he believes about the U.S., but when he suggested Germany, Europe and the rest of the world join the U.S. in defeating terrorism and the terrorists the silence was deafening.

With respect to the latter, maybe now he can understand what the U.S. has been facing for the last 5 or 6 years, having to pretty much go it alone, at least on the battlefields, in the effort to defeat those who wish to destroy us and other free nations in the world. Much of Europe doesn't have the will or courage to commit to the sacrifices that are necessary to win the war against terrorism and terrorists and which the U.S. has been committed to over the last several years.

On the former point, it became clear to me that the crowd's enthusiasm for Obama may well have been because he shares their views, i.e., the U.S. is evil, it embraces capitalism rather than the Europeans' preference for the failed economic system of socialism, and it believes a country's strength, values and success flow from its individual citizens and their efforts rather than from the government and its programs.

I believe a candidate for President of the U.S. who could offer such views of his country to Europe and the world and deliberately ignore and fail to mention any of the good that our country has brought to Europe and that world through its massive sacrifices and those of its citizens is reprehensible and a disgrace to our great nation and its leaders who together with our ordinary citizens assisted much of the world in securing and protecting the freedom it enjoys today.

Presidents Kennedy and Reagan delivered their speeches without denigrating our nation while pledging strong support for our European allies, and as a result, gained their support and respect. Candidate Obama chose to disrespect those great leaders and our country by disparaging the U.S. to curry favor with those same allies. President Reagan said, in effect, he wanted to tear down that wall; I believe Obama said he wants to tear down the United States. I hope we, the American voters, will not provide him that opportunity.

Borrow you some money? Do you mean lend?

Think how the economy has being going well for so long and now at an election season, oil went up.
The ripple affect of that and corn ethanol (obamas benefactor)being some of the things driving food and other prices up and you are somewhat on the way to figuring out which candidate that helps out. The wal mart economy ( china made) hurts this country also. Now, do you shop there?

Not even Obama can help you!

Because the problem isn't America being such and such. The problem is you.

Absolutely nothing will change no matter what President is elected I'm afraid. It's not like Obama is going to buy your groceries for you.

I'd look into immigrating to Venezuela or something if you want a free ride. And get off these boards and get to work or something! LOL!

It's called the economic cycle. Cycles have their ups and their downs that's why they are called cycles. But I have a strong hunch that you also believe Bush and his cronies have an Easy button they push that magically causes oil prices to go up and down, so any talk of economic basics is likely lost on you.

What makes Obama incompetent? The same people who dislike Obama voted for George Bush 2 times. What is the sense behind that? Please be fair with Obama and stop hiding behind racism.

                                                Happy,

It is typical of Obama supporters.

When they can't refute the truth they just call racist.

They learned it from Obama. That is what he has been doing his whole campaign. You notice in his speech he even referred to how he didn't look like "other people" who had given speeches there!

He's right, he doesn't. His ears are bigger.

It really sounds like Obama is admitting that Europe doesn't play their part. I want them to apologize for it.

I want Obama to admit that the Iraq war wasn't a mistake and that when the plan works it very well could make for a much more stable and productive region in the world. Without Saddam.

Then I want him to admit publicly he was wrong about the surge. Finally I'd like him to stop telling us all what is wrong. We all know things are wrong. We don't need somebody to tell us that there are things wrong, but that's where his "crock concert" speeches end with no plausible answers.

WOW! What is wrong with me? I must be in the wrong generation. Last time I knew I was a citizen of the UNTITED STATES OF AMERICA! Is Obama running for president of the US or president of the world? Maybe we should look closer at him, he is scarey! The president of the US cannot do what is best for the US, if he is trying to appease the other governments of the world! Do we want a world government and toss away what our forefathers fought so hard for? Do we want our country run on what is best for other countries? Why is he even campaigning in other countries? The news goes around the world now for other voters. I live in Illinois. within 100 miles of Chicago. We must be small beans...I do not recall him ever campaigning in our area...maybe I should move out of the country. If I want to know what he thinks I have to watch it on TV. Is this the way he is going to spend our money? He is frivolous with his own campaign money, worrying about what the world thinks of him...but has been too busy to come to his own back yard to campaign....where he may actually pick up some votes.

This was just a photo op for him. He's not going to say anything with substance. That's why McCain said he'll speak in Europe when he's president not while he's a candidate. He wants to focus on speaking to the people here. I'm not a fan of either candidate but I think it's a smart idea for candidates to speak to the people who vote for them not people who don't.

Some of you just hate Obama, obviously. Obama said that there is only one president at a time. What was he supposed to do? He did not go there and attack Mcain and bush as our own president has attacked him in Israel.

He did not go over there and air our domestic issues on foreign soil as bush and Mcain have done.

He went over there, inspired, and garnered support from our European allies without stepping on the toes of the current administration or his Republican rival. Its called "Class". You conservatives should get some.

He had 200,000 Germans waving American flags....wow.

He was not going to spell out policy on Foreiegn soil when he is not the president. If he did you would be attacking him for that....you cannot even admit when he does something right.

The turn out for Obama in Germany was a sight to behold. Maybe it is only lame white Americans who are so selfish and shortsighted that you are unable to see the "forest for the trees". Why can't you see that America has no respect on the world stage. We are thought of as ignorant bullies. Foreigners can see what is before you and you can't. White America get ready for a new regime. And when Wittie gets in office again, what are you going to say then Miss Lynde in Mad Dog America? My little high yellow lost again to da big white man. It's ok Lynde, your check will still be there on the first of the month and your auntee will take care of your 8 chillren when you want to go out and look for your 8 husbands.
