Barack Obama touched on American and European ideals in his speech in Berlin on Thursday, but was vague on crucial issues of trade, defense and foreign policy that currently divide Washington from Europe.
Oh you poor ellitist mainstream media. You clowns are not jounalists - rather you are PROPOGANDISTS.
Your time is coming up soon - and can we say "FAIRNESS DOCTRINE" will wipe you bozos out of TV next year and will be replaced with REAL JOURNALISTS.
LOL and yes I mean LOL!
Obama will be President no matter what you do.
haha
living it and loving it!
Now that's the true Obama...always vague, always lacking in detail. He won't have to worry about backtracking from his statements on this European tour...he said a lot but really said nothing....
you evidently didn't listen to the speech or don't know History. Maybe you have never suffered a loss or wondered where the next meal was coming from. He said much and made me proud of our country.
Like when he insulted the United States Repeatedly in his speeches ?
No wonder Europe loved him , he insulted the United States and felt the need to apologize to Europe for the United State's actions.
Since Europe has loved him so much , and he is hated here , he should take that as a lesson and stay in Europe.
What Barrack Hussein Obama has spoken about over seas , are the Bible's prophecies coming true , on how the next anti-Christ will come and rule the world and destroy it.
Man...the Rapture is coming true day after day.
I would suggest that everyone who plans to elect this man , accept Christ as their Lord and Personal Savior , since , when God cracks the sky , it will be better to be "right" than left behind.
May God have mercy on your souls.
Not one of here cares what Europe thinks of Obama , their vote does not count in our elections...YET!
so instead of "wowing" Europe he should worry more about his falling numbers here in the country that he wants to lead.
and while in Europe he shouldn't have Insulted the United States in his speech.
we were watching , ( that is why he didn't want to take the media with him ) he knew he planned on bad mouthing the United States while he was there , and he did.
good job , you Anti-American-Racist....yet again you didn't let us down , we knew you true colors would show through and they did.
Wake Up America , the only Europeans that you should worry about supporting Obama , would be HAMAS !
HAMAS SUPPORTS OBAMA !!!! SHOULD YOU ????
I am not rich, I do not have thousands of dollars in reserves but I will never vote for Obama. His policies are flawed and his speeches are not his own. ALSO, why won't he do town hall meetings with John McCain, I think it would be great to see the two of them go head to head with questions from the public. Obama will never do it because unless his speeches are scripted and written for him he sounds like a moron that truly doesn't know what he is talking about. Get your head out of the sand Laura, neither candidate seems to be the choice for either party but when it comes to leading this country someone who hasn't even sat in his own Senate office for 186 days seems less than qualified to run our country. Just a note, in case you didn't know...did you realize that his voting record in the Senate is further to the left the the declared socialist in the Senate. He talks about change, be careful of the change that you are looking for. He couldn't even stumble let alone walk over to the other party to make a compromise that is better for the people. McCain you argue,
What about McCain/Lieberman
McCain/Feingold
McCain/Kennedy
Do your research and don't be fooled by words, ACTIONS speak louder than words, and Obama has not acted at all in most Americans views. Just because polls done in NYC by NBC show that Obama is leading in everything, just so you know NYC IS A DEMOCRATIC HEAVY STATE AND CITY, the polls do not show the accurate feeling of the United States as a whole.
Good luck with your nominee
For Laura , P.T.Barnum said it best sweetheart.
"there is a sucker born every minute"
guess what Laura...... SUCKER !!!!!
you fell Obama's BS hook, line and sinker.
Good to see him wow the Germans as wonabe commander and chief he didn't even have time to
visit one base and address our troops who are Americans just tells you where his heads at who
cares what Europe thinks we have problems here to solve
Glad he had so much time to give a speech to the Germans who don't vote and neglited to
address our troops in Germany who do vote whats he thinking
He's just trying to repair the rift that the previous administration created with Europe.
American troops could have shown up if they wanted to. I'm sure many of them did.
That would have been a slap on the face to European officials to make the visit to Europe and only speak to American soldiers.
And as far as people saying that our enemies support Obama:
Who outside of America doesn't support Obama? It's easy to say that our enemies support Obama when the ENTIRE rest of the world does too.
Most every other country can't stand the GOP after Bush's cowboy politics. It's only natural they would support the other party, enemies and allies alike.
What about McCain/Lieberman
McCain/Feingold
McCain/Kennedy
He's essentially disowned them all, mentioning he would not vote for them if they were to come up today. That's right. He would vote against bills that bear his name.
John McCain was once a great Independent that transcended party, but in the past 2 years, he has worked overtime to pander to the extreme right of the Republican party.
This is another example of a NYT headline overselling its contents. "Leaders remain unsure where candidate stands on issues of trade, defense", yet they mostly quote newspaper editors and reporters.
The only examples of 'leaders' are two public officials in tertiary positions: Eberhard Sandschneider of the German Council on Foreign Relations and Peter Mandelson, Europe's trade commissioner. I wouldn't exactly call this Sarkozy and Merkel.
In any case, I get so sick of the NYT headlines making some grand overture only to read the article is rife with flimsy fact, speculation, and op-ed. Add this with MSNBC.com's oversimplification of the headline we get the already smarmy "Obama entrances Europe in vague tones" to the indicting "Obama wows Europe - vaguely".
Add this to Andrea Mitchell, who, well, let's face it, it's time for her to go, whose report is the video embedded in the article. A 26 minute speech on breaking down walls, global unity, American-European relations, WWII imagery, and the fight for freedom in Afghanistan and what does Andrea and MSNBC highlight?
"On foreign soil, Obama acknowledges U.S. flaws"
I get so sick of this oversimplified sensationalist reporting, but it's nigh unavoidable now. And just to reiterate, Andrea Mitchell is done. She has zero credibility left. When she gets back from her personal pity party and is through throwing tantrums about press access at military bases, it's time to pull the plug MSNBC.
It's ok, she's got Greenspan money. She doesn't need the job.
Obama is guilty of treason with his comments
Obama is guilty of treason with his comments
Satire?
Please explain yourself with this insane comment. Otherwise your post has no value.
More proof of the new conservative lieing,How dare you say msnbc is biais,i't proven on chris matthews hardball,(he is still old shcool repub, i guess) He had Mcleean, the old white house press secretary, not the one that died from faux news, the one that came out with a book.He stated that most nite time "conservative" "news" shows were given talking points from the white house, which is unconstitutional and propoganda,it's illegal,He specicly named FOX,O'reilly and Rush then stated all nite conservative shows,YOU REPUKES ARE 2 STUPID TO REALISE YOU ARE THE ONES BEING LIED TO,are to stupid to care that you arent very american......................but very fascist instead
Michelle, If you would go back and actually read any of my posts, you'll see I'm no conservative. That being said, you don't really help your point or entice others to see your viewpoints when you use language like this.
Remember, when you post here, you are acting as a surrogate of the position or candidate you're supporting. Using words like "Repuke" and 'fascist' are not going to win anybody over other than the 'choir'.
Think about it this way, if an independent came into this thread and saw two posts, one with the facts framed intelligently with clear points and documentation and another that is essentially name calling, with which one do you think they'd side? There are two unwritten rules of debate: 1) the first one to resort to personal attacks loses the debate and 2) the first to compare the others' policies to Hitler or the Nazis loses the debate. You've pretty much hit both with this post.
I think Michael Moore is an example of this. Michael Moore makes a lot of good points and generally has a good message, but I think his delivery and demeanor makes him seem to be a bit of an 'a-hole' to the point that he turns people off before they can even listen to what he has to say.
All things considered, I agree with some of your post, but you've got to work on your delivery. I think a good rule of thumb is to attach candidates' positions and media bias, not the individual posters here. I think you'll see an increase in 'vineacity' if you do this. Remember, you are a surrogate here. Make people understand, don't berate them for not understanding.
You are right,I am sorry but I am so angry that this administration is above ze law,I am reading so many posts I am getting them all mixed up,so I will take some time off and have fun on the internet, and forget about politics for a while before it makes me crazy,I apologize sincerely for all the posts I posted yesterday,I was haveing a temper trantrum over the whole unfairness facter of whitehouse feeding Fox news, news thankyou for the reality check and God Bless
Hey, no problem. I understand. We all get frustrated with this stuff, particularly the powerlessness we feel when we watch the news, knowing only a third of what they're saying is true and there's nothing we can do about it but post. I, too, find myself getting most heated at MSNBC, mainly because I expect more out of them. I know Fox is garbage, but I tend to look at MSNBC for some sanity. When they don't live up to it, as you can see with my posts during the Chuck Todd Q&A's, I lash out more than I probably should.
That being said, thank you for showing such self awareness.
Who cares what the Eurabians think of us. They have allowed multi-culturism to flourish and they've lost their own culture. They have been taken care of by their governments for so long, they have become like sheep. The only thing they would fight for is their government check!
And our liberal press thinks we should be just like them.
If Andrea thinks the U.S. is so flawed, she can move to Eurabia, and we will be less so.
RIP New York Times, the end is near! Paper of Record! Riiight!!!!
Obama also forgot to talk about pie. Apple, cherry, chocolate-cream...even pumpkin. With all of the important pies out there, how could he neglect their importance by not discussing them?
WHEN WILL THIS CANDIDATE LEARN!?!? Pastries deserve as much a place in his Berlin speech as the dozens of other issues he addressed to the 200,000 people in attendance. For the amount of time he was receiving grand applause on his rhetoric and support for his new breed of politics he neglected something we all hold dear.
Shame on him for not including pie on the wide-range of topics he covered in his lengthy speech to the German masses who support an American bringing new blood to Washington while McCain speaks to local newspapers only because of his collossal flub on Couric's show speaking of troop surges months before the President even announced them.
We want to hear about pie, Obama! That's taste we can believe in!
Simply " vague". end of story. He's surely not going to flimflam Europe like he does his sheep here in the USA. Hope his writers don't get sic or he's up creek without a paddle.
LMAO....loved the title of this story !!!
Who cares what they think of him. They can't vote for him. So there!
Sorry Mr. Hopper, Obama is short on details, long on vague often grandiose ideas. He has great delivery of speeches written by professional speech writers but is poor in extemporaneous speaking. Obama has shown himself to be a gifted campaigner but a lack luster elected official. He hasn't delivered where it really matters. He would fair very badly with John McCain in a town hall meeting and he avoids them. Too bad the Presidency isn't scripted. And yes Europe is awakening to the fact that Obama doesn't have any new ideas and is a little shaky on the old ones. And yes, belatedly, the press is realizing that they too have been "handled", manipulated and at times shut out so that they show Obama only in the way he and his staff want their product to be shown.
Obama is short on details, long on vague often grandiose ideas.
What exactly did you expect him to say to a crowd of Berliners? Lay out his plan for Universal Healthcare? Give detailed descriptions of strikes in the areas around the Pakistan-Afghanistan border? Of course not. That being said, Obama did touch on subjects such as German involvement in Afghanistan and its importance to the effectiveness of NATO, ending the genocide in Darfur, and the rights of voters in Zimbabwe. It was a speech about America and Europe's leadership in the world and the potential for a renewed strength, not necessarily every step on how to get there.
So I wouldn't necessarily call it detailed, but I wouldn't call it vague or insubstantial either. Remember, he's not president, yet. These things will come in time.
He has great delivery of speeches written by professional speech writers but is poor in extemporaneous speaking.
Did you even see the primary debates? You should check them out on Youtube. He cleaned the other, more experienced candidates' clocks, and, remember, he was the underdog then. He's not perfect, but don't discount his ability to go off script.
And can you seriously knock his ability to go extemporaneous when McCain has consistently turned out such gems as his 'killing Iranian civilians with cigarettes', 'Bomb Iran', 'Birth control vs viagra', 'Anbar awakening timeline mixup', 'Iraq is the first major conflict since 9/11 (forgetting Afghanistan)', 'Shia, Sunni, What's the difference?', 'Somalia, Sudan, What's the difference?', 'The Iraq-Pakistan border', 'Iran is funding Al Qaida (twice)', 'Missile silos in Czechoslovakia (twice)', and 'Abdul Sattar Buzaigh al-Rishawi would be killed if not for the surge (he was)'?
Add this to the ever-evolving definition of what the 'surge' is and you'll see McCain has his own problems going tit-for-tat on subjects.
Obama has shown himself to be a gifted campaigner but a lack luster elected official.
If you're going to make a scathing indictment like this, you should at least back it up with facts, otherwise this has no value. Please provide details on his being a 'lackluster elected official'.
He would fair very badly with John McCain in a town hall meeting and he avoids them.
I suppose we'll find out on Tuesday, October 7, during the town hall format debate. Again, be careful what you wish for. Go back and watch the primary debates, I think you'll be surprised at Obama's resolve.
Too bad the Presidency isn't scripted
Right, otherwise, we wouldn't have such supreme moments as foreign policy speeches in the dairy aisle.
And yes Europe is awakening to the fact that Obama doesn't have any new ideas and is a little shaky on the old ones.
Since you seem to have your finger on the pulse of European zeitgest, I must assume that you are yourself a European, otherwise, how could you make such a blanket statement? The only thing I can say for sure is that 200,000 people showed up yesterday. 200,000 from foreign countries came to see a man that was, yes, a state senator in Illinois 5 years ago. The New York Times, on its bullet train to obscurity, picked out 4 or 5 people so they could make themselves a headline.
And yes, belatedly, the press is realizing that they too have been "handled", manipulated and at times shut out so that they show Obama only in the way he and his staff want their product to be shown.
On McCain's bus, the press have to 'earn' their right to speak in McCain's private interviewing booth. How is that not being handled?
The truth is both campaigns are trying to control the message. That's what presidential campaigns do. They try to create headlines, favorable ones for their candidate. It's naive to think that they don't. Every campaign 'handles' the media.
The truth is that Obama was making news this week, McCain was not. Obama was being driven around by the King of Jordan while McCain was being driven around the Bush compound in Kennebunkport on a golf cart by Bush Sr. Tell me which one is more newsworthy.
Obama was meeting with commanders and leaders in Iraq and Afghanistan while McCain was making incoherent foreign policy comments in front of cheese. Tell me which one is newsworthy.
Obama was delivering a speech in Berlin in front of 200,000 people. McCain was having sausage and cream puffs at a German restaurant. Tell me which one is more newsworthy.
I'm not exactly sure what you're trying to say on this point, but if this is another "media loves Obama" moment, I'm still not buying it. CBS covering up McCain's Anbar timeline statement and Afghanistan omission are evidence enough of this farce.
Most of the criticisms I have seen of Obama's speech neatly break down into four subtypes:
1. Dislike that he claimed "citizen of the world" status in his opening, "Tonight, I speak to you not as a candidate for President, but as a citizen--a proud citizen of the United States, and a fellow citizen of the world." Amusingly, it is clear that most if not all of the people who found this objectionable are unaware he was echoing Ronald Reagan, who made the same claim in 1982, when in an address to the United Nations he introduced himself as "both a citizen of the United States and of the world."
2. Accusations that the speech lacked substance, that it was filled with vague generalities that matched exactly what his audience wanted to hear. Of course, had he given specifics of his post-election plans, he'd have been criticized far more for his presumption in assuming he'd already won. However, although most of the speech stuck to themes that most people can agree on, he did indicate that more military assistance would be expected of Europe in future (something the current administration has been seeking for years, BTW). I've seen praise for that point in the speech even in the National Review.
3. Claims that the expense of the trip and speech was borne by the American taxpayers. This is only partially true. While in the Middle East, he was on a taxpayer-paid-for CODEL. In Europe the costs (aside from Secret Service costs) were paid for by his campaign. I don't believe I've seen McCain criticized for the several trips to Iraq, Colombia, Mexico, England and Canada (and I think I'm leaving some countries out) he's taken in the past year.
4. And, most of all, Obama is criticized for his arrogance in delivering a major speech to hundreds of thousands of Europeans while on foreign soil BEFORE being elected president. I don't understand this, actually. It's not as if he forced anyone to listen to him. He never said, "Vote for me" or criticized John McCain (or even mentioned him) or even raised campaign themes, aside from urging more foreign support for efforts in Afghanistan. Any private or public figure should be free to give a nonpartisan speech on foreign soil. Given that McCain's campaign had raised the question of whether Obama could look passably presidential on the world stage and McCain had an election fundraiser in London this spring and gave a rather partisan speech in Ottawa to the Economic Club of Canada, I really don't see how McCain's supporters can make this argument with a straight face.
Did I miss any?
No you didn't miss anything, You hit Obama's butt with a big democratic kiss. You hit it right on target. Smooooooooouch
Frank and all you other Obama haters, it's a shame you don't have a brain, otherwise you'd know that he's the ONLY choice we have, considering "Bomb, bomb, bomb, bomb Iran" McCain has lost his mind, and is only coherent when reading from a prompter. And ask yourself, would you hire the old man to run your business?
Yes, I would hire the old man to run my company. I will also vote for him for President of the United States of America.
Headlines and articles like this are why I have given up on US news for the most part. If you can I would encourage obtaining a different perspective on the election and these candidates from The BBC, Canadian Broadcasting, German or French news. PBS offers a ray of hope nationally but it seems as if most reporters and news media want the headline that grabs and are being highly irresponsible (or feigning a childhood ignorance) regarding the impact of these headlines. I think the biggest battle these candidates face is the media- With all the spin why are we surprised that all we have is cotton candy?
Flimsy article, I agree ! Title of article simplistic, & rather elementary. I would think all Americans should be proud of Senator Obama, a product this country educated & helped shape. He has been well received and that should be impressive to all. If one has traveled to Europe in the last 8 years one would realize what today means. In addition to those who be believe we are not interdependent in this world ,.please remember COALITION FORCES NEEDED !!!!!!!!!!
Look, let's be real here. If the media doesn't have an "O" in their headlines, they may well go asunder - if not what for what they are being paid now - but promised to pull themselves out of their current economic-crunch come pre-election November this fall.
Joke is technically, not only on Obama but the media itself.
If presidential candidate Senator Barack Obama really truly and sincerely made this tour of another side of the world as a senatorial representative of the United States, rather than as a free (press coverage) world-wide political publicity stunt, it would seem to me that the plane in which he was transported REALLY SHOULD HAVE appropriately PROUDLY SHOWN and displayed THE SYMBOL OF THE AMERICAN FLAG!
Instead, this self-appointed savior of nothing but hype chose to RE-CONFIGURE his plane and remove our flag with a replacement of his "halo" circular symbol.
This self-appointed symbol not only demeans America (and its voters) who've paid for the trip, believe in the flag and believe we sent with our taxpaying dollars a senator of the U.S. on this trip - the very act of exchanging out the American flag for a political logo represents and advertises Obama's premature assumption that everyone is as crazy about him as he is about himself!
This thwarted egotistical purposeful separation from America REALLY (comma) displayed to the entire world that he is ready and most willing to throw his country and its taxpaying supporters who paid for this cute little tour bill (as with all the rest of his alliances previous...I think a grandmother, a preacher...anybody who told the truth about him or might hurt his chances for election) underneath the proverbial bus.
And unfortunately, at this point, the press and media we once so trusted (while they may not see this coming) have no clue that the once-trusting eyes of its American readership already see them (after they have served their purpose) lying flat at Obama's last bus stop.
BY THE WAY - if you stop at "M" (you have to search for this because its all about "O" these days) you will find that the other presidential candidate, John McCain (Republican) is meeting with Dalai Lama.
Obama is wasting his followers' and taxpayer's dollars to convince (with his "halo" logo) - parading his supposed spiritualism and charisma around America and the world with his "rock-star" rallies .
Meanwhile, McCain -with all he's been through in his loyalty and love for our country - is home, back at the ranch - not getting much press....meeting with Lama.
If Obama was not using our tax dollars and free-media coverage to take a state-paid political advertisement on tour, I guess he might have selected a connection with the Dalia Lama as well.
Problem is he might not be welcome...as I am sure the Dalai might just only welcome folks who are truly (not media-hyped) spiritual into his realm.
Note to media:
(1) If we read your"O" political headlines - trust the fact that we do also read where your company stands (and has fallen) in its credit rating, its stock market value and how many employees/pages you are getting rid of to absorb the economic crash/crunch of the "right now."
(2) We understand what you are going through - because we all are going through it with you. We've trusted and read you through the ages and will advertise with you if we can find a way to afford to make that happen....but frankly as avid viewers, readers and advertisers alike we are wondering why you would sell yourselves down the political stream......................
(3) How come you pegged that 1 million people were going to show up in Berlin - when only 200,000 came to the Obama party? Being 4/5 off the mark is kind of embarrassing, isn't it?
(4) It used to be called "Freedom of the Press" but many of us, now are wondering if we are "Victim of the Press"
(5) Sell your souls as you may....but that does not guarantee that we readers/voters are swallowing only the "O" that you feed us. We have forever constitutionally deserved the right of freedom of the press and have depended upon the honesty of that premise.
(6)....but in whatever instance you are incapable of delivering that promise or product - DO NOT sell us short.
Because as Americans, we not only have the right to choose the presidential candidate of our choice - we have the inherent right to negate any media who are biased and according to the laws that prevail, do not offer up equal information on the candidates at hand.
It's freedom of the press when their is a big joke associated with the Obama family.
Republicans, including McCain stated frequently he needs to go oversees. Now he is there, of course getting new reported about the visit, Republicans continue to complain.
The only way to make them happy is if he dropped out, and then they would be more comments about 'we knew he could not handle the pressure'.
Now you have the right to negate bias reporting - Bye Bye Freedom of Press and Speech. It does not suit us now.
Actually, this is not a favorable article for Obama - not really pleasing everyone who heard his words - but who can please everyone.
Others state Germany does not matter, that is where the U.S. is wrong. We have to and need to work with other countries, we actually owe other countries so much money, we need to work with them. And since every hardship outside of the country we assist, sometimes omitting our own people, it is important.
Stop hating one person, and look at the entire picture. With or without Obama in office we need to work with other countries and definitely work at home.
No one cares what is on his plane; I wonder if those who proclaim so about the flag, how many lapel pins do you have and how often do you wear them. It is the same as persons wearing a cross. Who and what you are does not need to be advertised in material things, it shows outward. Wear a cross and curse, or you displaying the Christian role.
No matter what you feel about this man personally, he carries himself in a way that as an American, an he is stating he is an American, he shows pride and calmness.
I do not know if he is the better candidate, but the reasons most persons are not supporting him, at least the reasons they state are ludicrous-his name, his father, not wearing a flag lapel, spouse states she is proud of this country for the first time.
After reading many of these blogs over the past months, and reading the hateful nasty comments about Blacks, Africans, Latinos... we are a racist country which may appear improved, but actuality is things are bad.... I talk with some of my old college friends who are of other nationalities ... we are a disgrace and many times I am not proud... and NO ... I am not moving either. If you do not like something, you make attempts to change them, which I thought would be the purpose of someone wanting to run for the highest office of this country.
God bless us all.
Berlin only expected 75,000 and 200,000 showed up, I guess that says something that you can't.
Yeah, but he was speaking in between two rock concerts. Do you think maybe a few of those folks were there for the music??
Uhm... I was really hoping to see Obama be elected president and turn over the American economy applying the most simple of rules "Don´t spend more than you earn or have" and injecting the money into the American markets to boast the home market. I was also hoping he would distance himself of waging wars which are costly and ineffective. After reading this article I am really not sure anymore, lets face it, he is obviously planning something that he believes will cause change and thereby initially upset many people. I thought he would introduce sound a economy cutting lots of exaggerated expenditures like war but it seems I am wrong.
I think I will have to acquaint myself more with his politics to draw a new conclusion over his plans.
FINALLY SOME KNOW HIS TRUE SELF..HOPEFULLY MOST VOTERS IN U.S.A. ARENT TOO OVERWHEMLED WITH HIS ELEQUENT SPEECHES AND VAGUE RHETRIOC WORDS . EUROPEANS DONT TRUST HIM AND WE SHOULD NOT EITHER. HES TOO VAGUE ON ANY SUBJECT HE ADDRESSES. THE MIDDLE EAST IS ANOTHER STORY AS THEY REEALIZE HE RARELY HAS ANY IDEA WHAT HES TALKING ABOUT TOWARDS THEM. THEY KNOW THEY WILL NEVER TAKE HIM SERIOUSLY AND WILL TAKE ADVANTAGE OF HIS FLIP-FLOP STYLE SPEECHES/MIND/THOUGHTS.
you know I am so tired of people calling Obama a flip-flopper. If he stands by his word he is then called stubborn. Quit trying to run this man down for what he is not and see him for what he is. I was proud as an American that an American went to overseas and could actually give an educated speech. We need help in this country and reading many of your remarks only enhances that belief. What is wrong with so many people now is trying to pass supposed judgement on Obama and not really listening to him and what he is trying to represent. Try doing that before you pass judgement. The speech in Berlin was fantastic and contrary to many peoples beliefs, we do need the World to be on our side. We are fighting terrorism WORLD WIDE and we do need to come together in peace and be friends. Right now and for the past 7 years our country has suffered desparity and lost much prosperity because of isolation and a President without proper leadership. The war in Iraq should have never been so the Surge remains wrong. No one mentions the lives lost of our own and displacement of millions of Iraqi people. Look at time-lines and what really happened. We don't need any more Bombs but instead peace. Wake up people !!!
You have no made any sensible point. Tell me what you were expecting from somebody who visited Europe as a Senator but not a president. Your useless McCain will never be president.
Captain Obvious - I farily think you missed the whole point. Are you an American or just some outsider pretending that you wanna be one?
No Gail, I got the point and I don't agree with it. While we're speaking in regards to points, you certainly missed mine. Are all pie-enthusiasts foreigners now?
Phoenix Arizona, Gail...I don't pretend to be anything.
OBAMA THEY KNOW YOU..HE JUST DOESNT GET IT..ONE CANT BE SO "VAGUE" WITH EUPOREANS..THEY READ BETWEEN THE LINES MORE THAN SADLY WE TRUSTING AMERICANS. THE MIDDLE EAST IS A DIFFERENT STORY..THEY KNOW THEY CAN/WILL TAK ADVNTAGE OF HIM/USA SHOULD HE BE OUR PRESIDENT..VERY SAD..HOPEFULLY AMERICANS WILL WISE UP BEFORE VOTES ACTUALLY COUNT.
FOLKS WE ARE IN FOR BIGTIME TROUBLES IF HE BECOMES THE PRESIDENT.
I CANT SAY ID RATHER HAVE McCAIN EITHER AS NO CHANGES WILL WE HAVE WITH HIM ..JUST ANOTHER "W"= DOES NOT MEAN A WIN FOR USA.
I SEE NO CHANGES IN USA TILL OUR ELECTED GOVT OFFICALS TAKE A GRIP ON ALL OUR PROBLEMS AS NONE OF THEM GIVE A HOOT ABOUT WE STRUGGINLY AMERICANS IN OUR EVERYDAY LIVES ..SAD DAYS AHEAD FOR THE U.S.A..GOD HELP US IS OUR ONLY CHOICE!
we got in big time trouble because of Bush and those that remain to represent a war that should have never been. We need to have all countries care about us. You need to wake up.
Michael Sheridan - you seem intelligent enough. What's your problem here?
I am going to say it again, the Republicans are going to win Big in November. This guy is nothing without a properly working tele-prompter and a speech written by people a lot smarter than himself.
No one should know better than the Republicans regarding speeches -McCain and Bush over the past 8 years really need to get an educated person to write and prepare them for speeches - they are an embarrassment.
the response of many Europeans to his potential presidency has been gratifying — emotional, responsive, replete with the sense of hope he seeks to engender about a more flexible, less ideological America. Lets face it, the Europeans are socialist and they see Obama as the great hope of changing Americas ideals and way of life. "A more flexible, less ideological America.
Folks, if you're not reading between the lines then you're blinded by the hype. I see Socialism written all over this one. He's telling us what he has in store for America. He wants a more socialist America. Depending on Government, a Government run system that no longer leaves room for free enterprise and it starts with taxes. He'll tax the wealthy to a point where he will make it impossible for new growth and thus halt the economy to a stagnation as we have never seen,. Then the offer of Government will step in and all will rely on the Government for all things. It's coming if he's elected. Slowly but surely.
Mc Cain didn't get half of the news coverage or any gratifying remarks by the media "Obama Wows Europe" MC Cain didn't even get a 4th. page review on his visit to Europe. It smells of bias and I for one will not vote for Obama nor my wife or my whole family. It would be different if all played fair and a concrete non bias approach was taken by the media, but because of the bias in the media, I'm voting for MC Cain because he's staying close to what American Ideals are all about. Obama is all over the place. He says this one day and the opposite the next day. You don't know how to take him. One day he's On left the next day he's in the middle and a day later he's all the way to the right. Now tell me how are you suppose to make sense of that stance? Don't buy into the hype or you'll drown with all the rest of the rats. Obama is playing a smooth flute and all the democrats are dancing to his tune. He's the pied piper of the new democratic movement. He's leading you to the water to drown.
We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice, ambition, revenge, or gallantry, would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." --October 11, 1798 Thomas Jefferson
Frank, dear, what good does it do for the rich to keep producing products with the help of their big tax cuts, when those of us in the middle and lower classes can't afford to buy the product? This government controls the very poor with entitlements, which is socialism, helps the rich get richer with tax breaks with that weak argument of "they put more into the economy." The rest of us are hung out to dry. The government takes more than 25% of my pay check every month, for things like my social security, my Medicare, not to mention what it takes for itself. My God, and then when I retire, I have to fight tooth and nail to get medical care to help pay for what Medicare doesn't pay, and try to survive on what pittance the government sees fit to give me each month. Whereas if I invested it, I could have been a millionaire. Lucky for me, I have other funds that I did invest in and will give me more to live on, but plenty of other folks aren't so lucky.
And Frank it's so boring listening to you and all the others like you, because it's you folks that are going to be the downfall of this country with your blind stupidity.
And I'm glad you'll not be voting for Obama, your wife, or family. They must be proud.
Right on Frank--His foreign speeches are more B**S and all americans need to pay close attention--we'll ALL end up in the ghetto while giving our money to the mid east and Africa
Obama lacks substance
seems like you have little as well. How can you say he has no substance. Have you really listened to him? At least he knows the borders of the Middle East.
I have listened to all I want of Obama--I don't fall for his socialist b**s--. Now I Push the mute button when he comes on.
Gail-392248 - Problem? I didn't really have a problem with the Berlin speech, although he's certainly given several that were better. To my mind, there is no downside to improving relations with our allies.
I only posted what I did because it seems quite clear that in this election cycle, people are voting either for Obama, against him, or are honestly unsure. The people who are actually excited about McCain and voting for him are a small minority.
I don't expect or even try to change the worldview of political partisans. I know exactly how difficult, if not impossible, that is to do. No brief post on the Internet is going to change someone's ideology. However, if I see arguments opposing Obama for reasons that appear to me to be insufficient or mistaken, I try to help out by highlighting the flaws I believe I see in their logic. Unaligned readers who come later can make up their own minds whose arguments seem more convincing.
For the record, I do not consider Barack Obama to be "The One," to borrow from the rhetoric of his opponent's campaign staff. I can imagine far more desirable Presidents than Obama is likely to be, although he's quite good at being a candidate and I vastly prefer the idea of him in office to that of John McCain. What puzzles me a bit is that so many of the people who post against Obama seem to have no idea what they themselves want in a President. As a group, they certainly show little enthusiasm about the nominee of the party I must assume they support. In fact, the only Republican candidate who actually has an really active following so far as I can tell is Ron Paul.
Tell me, if you will, what is it about Senator McCain that has convinced you that he should get your vote in these difficult times for our country? This is not meant as snark, but as an honest question.
McCain is the other choice and not my first choice. He is less riskier. But most importantly, he has proved that he would move to the center and work across the isle. Sure right now his is campigning and doing his best to appeal the the conservative base, but he will work with the Democrats far more than Obama will work with the Republicans. Obama is the embodiment of liberalism and for which it stands, mostly anti-American, big government, more bureaucratic programs, weakening of our military and higher taxes.
So what your sayng Michael is which of the lesser of two evils will Americans vote for. THis is really a sad day in American history. A Democratic candidate who didn't know where Iran was and a Republican Candidate who is pre-judge as Bush # 2. It's crazy. Making a decision for me is easy. I'll vote for the "Right" one. lol.
Obama is the embodiment of liberalism and for which it stands, mostly anti-American, big government, more bureaucratic programs, weakening of our military and higher taxes.
Independant who will never vote obama
Well, I speak as a liberal with libertarian leanings here, so feel free to fact-check me if you doubt, but Obama's record and platform is far better than or just as good as McCain's on most of those issues (from your point of view).
Taking them in reverse order:
1. Higher taxes. Both Obama and McCain were against Bush's tax cuts when they were first proposed. McCain has since recanted, of course. However, of the tax plans that they have put forward in this election, Obama's plan has lower taxes for almost everyone than McCain's plan does. You have to have an income above $250,000/year to get a raise in taxes under Obama's plan.
2. Weakening of our military. Both Obama and McCain wish to enlarge the size of our military: Obama by 90,000 and McCain by 150,000. Point: tie. However, Obama has consistently gotten better marks from veteran's organizations than McCain has in terms of votes and bills put forth, and his record supporting vets extends back to his time in the Illinois legislature, so it's not new. Point: Obama. I don't see how a credible argument that he wishes to weaken the military can be made, especially as he clearly thinks that our military's work in Afghanistan is of vital importance.
3. Big government and more bureaucratic programs. Government bureaucracy has exploded in size in the last 7 years of this Republican administration, both in increased funding for existing programs and the creation of new ones. I'll provide links on request, but honestly all you have to do is Google and the facts jump out at you. I'd argue that given that both Obama and McCain voted in most instances with their party and as the Republican Party is responsible for the aforementioned growth, McCain is more likely responsible for "big government" than Obama. I will give McCain credit for focusing on reducing earmarks, although they make up only a tiny, tiny part of the total budget. Obama is not known much as a fiscal watchdog, but it's worth mentioning that he has several times introduced legislation to "prohibit the awarding of a contract or grant in excess of the simplified acquisition threshold unless the prospective contractor or grantee certifies in writing to the agency awarding the contract or grant that the contractor or grantee has no seriously delinquent tax debts."
4. Anti-Americanism. I'm sorry, but this is silly. Neither Obama nor McCain are anti-American. People who are don't run for President. Both have spoken extensively of their love for this country. Both have been blessed with success in a way that would be impossible elsewhere.

I have to admit that I'm unaware of the Iran ignorance on Obama's part you are referencing. Did it happen some time ago? What was it, exactly? However, given the numerous errors in geography, history, and geopolitics that McCain has been made throughout this campaign and especially in the past month, I'm not going to give McCain a thumbs up over Obama on this.
As for being pre-judged as Bush #2, McCain could easily dispel such talk simply by taking positions at odds with those held by Bush. Aside from a slight tendency toward environmentalism, he has not. I admit, I admired McCain's stand vs. torture when he still held it, but when that went by the wayside, so did my respect.
Michael,
What is good about McCain is thet he's not Obama.
Other than that, I don't think there isn't a better choice.
It seems to always come down to that in elections. Vote for the least harmful from the choices the politicians give you.
Nice post. Honest and straight forward without being condescending. Thank you. Both candidates have flaws. Which ones can you look past, which ones make you cringe? Some people have compared some of Obama's speeches with Reagan's. Reagan was known as an orator, he wrote many of his own speeches. I do not honestly know if Obama write his own speeches or not. But when he, or McCain for that matter, talk candidly, they are rough and don't stay on topic real well. Reagan was good of the cuff. Obama has promised quite a few big money projects that I don't think he has completely funded. I don't want to give anymore handouts. I don't mind assistance (low interest loans, grants for college, job training, etc). I don't want to just give people money. Read that last part as "Give a man a fish, he eats for a day. Teach him to fish, he eats for a lifetime." As you said in your post above, a lot of programs came in the last 7 years. Most of which I'm not fond of. I'm really not fond of the "rebate" stimulus checks that were sent out. We need a balanced budget. I can understand McCain's choice on Bush's tax cut. It was already there. Someone else got bloodied for raising the tax. It doesn't hurt as bad to keep it as putting it back. If he moves to raise the tax now it would hurt. People really don't like to give the government money. It doesn't matter which party controls what. It's my money, and I need it now. You can't have it. All things considered, I'm still with McCain.
Obama is the very embodiement of the "FLIM FLAM MAN".
..
As I read this article it is about what the Europeans want for them and what America does against them. What? Let me think about this. This isn't about THEM it is about the United States of AMERICA. What a crazy article. And I am voting for McCain because he is the ONE that is close to keeping morals alive in this country than Obama! It isn't always about money or economics. Although it must be because many Americans keep bringing that up. Don't get me wrong that is important, but it's a cycle. It'll get better. But with morals and values, that doesn't come back and never will.
Angela...........We have no government armed with power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. .....• "It is apprehended that, Mahometans (Muslims), pagans, etc., may be elected to high offices under the government of the United States. Those who are Mahometans, or any others who are not professors of the Christian religion, can never be elected to the office of President or other high office, [unless] first the people of America lay aside the Christian religion altogether, it may happen. Should this unfortunately take place, the people will choose such men as think as they do themselves.
[Elliot's Debates, Vol. IV, pp 198-199, Governor Samuel Johnston, July 30, 1788 at the North Carolina Ratifying Convention]
..This says it all Angela
Could you elaborate on the morals and values that give McCain such a big push over Obama?
Angela, your comment is about as garbled as McCain's. McCain isn't someone who can talk about morals much less anything else.
Let's see, Angela, Obama, a devoted family man, married only one time, two beautiful children, no scandal in background.
Let's see....McCain, who was married first to Carol, had documented extramarital affairs during their marriage, including the one beginning in April 1979, when McCain met and began shacking up with Cindy Lou Hensley, an Arizona special education teacher and Hensley & Co. heiress, which led to his divorce. Ross Perot said at the time, "After [John McCain] came home, Carol walked with a limp. So he threw her over for a poster girl with big money from Arizona and the rest is history." So who has better morals and values, Angela?
I sure would not be bringing up "morals" if you want to promote your candidate Barrack Obama.
How many morals did he have when he bought marijuana, coke, and crack off the street?
How many morals did he have when he stole cars?
And to say that there is no scandal attached to him -- well, how about the Tony Rezko scandal - you know the crook who helped Obama buy his house?
And what about the Larry Sinclair scandal?
I think there is plenty of scandal to go around on Obama's side.
You just choose to ignore Obama's bad choices yet want to exaggerate John McCain's.
Yes, I can see how we should be upset that he divorced his wife - 30 YEARS AGO.
And how dare he stay happily married now for THIRTY YEARS!
Shame on him! Forget that millions of other Americans have divorced! How dare John McCain do the same as millions of other Americans!
I think we should just stone him!
